IIT-JEE Board Makes Three Major Changes

The Joint Admission Board (JAB) of IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) has made three major changes in the system under the compulsion of a notice issued from the Supreme Court on special leave petition (SLP) filed by Rajiv Kumar of IIT-Kharagpur.

 

As per sources, Kumar, the first one to find out faults in IIT-JEE, has not been credited by IIT-Kanpur, which is conducting the entrance examination this year. Also, none of the changes announced last week are part of the admission brochure. It is believed that affidavit by IIT-Kanpur in the SC would now claim that since three major changes have been implemented, Kumar's SLP be dismissed.

 

The three changes includes is putting scanned copies of answer sheet of each candidate, announcing correct answers within 48 hours of the examination and giving marks of each candidate, qualified or not - still do not fulfil the slew of prayers that Kumar has made. However, for one, the demand to use pen so that answer sheets cannot be tampered with instead of pencil to encircle the answer scripts is not being implemented this year. It is believed that pens could be allowed from next year. But every year, the IIT that conducts JEE comes up with new set of rules and, therefore, sources said it is too early to say if the demand of use of pen would be allowed.

 

Besides, Kumar had made a request that JAB should be asked not to repeat same set of persons as question setters, or JEE administrators for more than two years and also to ensure strict vigilance. He had also requested that JAB be asked to discard the concept of extended merit list, and to give all-India rank to all the candidates. JAB was also asked to publish status of vacant and filled-in seats on a day-to-day basis during the counseling session for admission. Another important prayer of Kumar was direction to JAB that the unilateral declaration given by a candidate, behind which IIT takes refuge when challenged with irregularities in JEEs - is of no legal consequence.

Mumbai Students Addressed By Google Tech-Head, Bluetooth Inventor

Google's Chief Technology Advocate Michael Jones, Bluetooth inventor Jaap Haartsen, and constructor of the world's tallest building William Baker will address thousands of students at the 'Techfest' organized by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay starting on Friday.

While Jones will speak about how Google developed Google Earth and Google Maps, Haartsen will talk about development of Bluetooth. A whopping 75,000 students are expected to participate in several events spanned over a period of three days starting on Friday.

"Genius that he was, Da Vinci had constructed mechanical flying birds during his last years. Reconstruction of two of his works will be exhibited for the first time at 'Techfest' by Niccolai-Techno Art Research Group from France," said Gajendra Dhaka, a student organizer.

Several competitions like Full Throttle - modeled on the lines of rally racing, and Robowars, the inter-college combat robotics, promise to keep the thrill of students alive and kicking. IANS

IIT-JEE may goes online in next three years

After the conversion of the Common Admission Test (CAT) for management aspirants and the All India Engineering Entrance Examination(AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) into online computer-based tests, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) too might be converted to the online format in the coming years.

The IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB) which is comprised of all JEE chairmen, has decided to make the entrance test for admission to the IITs computer based instead of the usual paper-pencil test format.

However, the process of making the examinationonline may still take some time due to a glitch that the IITs have not archived their old question papers.

According to a member of the Joint AdmissionBoard, the matter of making JEE a computer based test had been discussed by the board when they had met this year. "The problem we are facing right now is that we don't have a ready question bank. If we are to make JEE a computer based online test, we would require a huge question bank that has questions of a constant difficulty level," he stated.

He further added that the fact that the old question papers had been destroyed had slowed down the process to make JEE an online test.

JAB members have said that due to the spiraling numbers of IIT aspirants, it might take them around three years to make the JEE a computer based test as a completely new question bank will have to be developed for the test to be offered online.

In the year 2008, when the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) had announced that the CAT would be made an online test, the IITs had speculated that the same could not be done for the JEE as it was also conducted in Singapore and hence the time difference between the two countries would affect the testing process.

When asked if the JAB will be outsourcing the online testing procedure, a faculty member said that the IITs had the technical knowledge for conducting the online testbut might look for a partner if the number of students appearing for the examination was too large.

Phd In Information Technology Begins By IIT

IIT-Kharagpur professors involved in fake institute scam

Further investigations into the fake institute scam that had been unearthed at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Kharagpur have revealed evidence that links four more professors at the IIT with the operation of the fake institute that was being run by senior IIT professor Amit Kumar Ghosh.

The Human Resource Development Ministry had been asked by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) to probe the alleged irregularities in the appointment of the IIT-Kharagpur registrar T.K. Ghoshal.

Two former IIT-Kharagpur directors have also been named by Ghosh in the scam. However, the former directors have both denied the allegations.

The fresh evidence that has been found by the police includes a photograph fro ma convocation ceremony of the fake institute that showed five IIT-Kharagpur professors seated next to Ghosh. These include Pallab Kumar Chattopadhyaya, professor of agriculture and food engineering and Punyabrata Duta Gupta, professor of electrical engineering.

Students who had been duped by enrolling at the fake institute have written to the Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, asking him to take strict action against everyone involved in the scam.

India, France agreed to set up a centre of excellence at IIT Rajasthan

India and France agreed to collaborate in setting up a centre of excellence at IIT Rajasthan, hours after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Nicolas Sarkozy had discussed the proposal.

France will also help set up a joint laboratory at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, as part of efforts to increase cooperation in education and research.

Singh himself told reporters about the agreement on IIT Rajasthan, which recently began functioning from a temporary campus in Jodhpur, at a joint news conference with Sarkozy.

A French consortium will help the IIT set up the centre, which will work on technologies for health, renewable energy (especially solar energy), aerospace, mechanical engineering and technologies for art, conservation and heritage. The consortium is made up by French universities and other higher education and research institutions.

Also, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed for joint research and student exchange between institutions under ParisTech (which has some of the best French engineering and business schools) and the seven older IITs.

The ParisTech institutions include AgroParisTech, Arts et Métiers ParisTech, Chimie ParisTech, Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, Ecole Polytechnique and Telecom ParisTech.

Another memorandum was signed to set up an “International Joint Laboratory” at the IISc, Bangalore, with the help of the Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement, France.

The French minister for higher education and research, Valerie Pecresse, met human resource development minister Kapil Sibal and discussed areas of cooperation.

Pecresse has already said her country aims to triple the number of Indian students studying at French universities by 2012. About 1,700 Indian students now study in France. The number of French students in India has remained below 100 for the past several years.

“France and India call for an increase in bilateral student exchanges and pledge to facilitate the academic stays of French students in India and Indian students in France,” a joint statement said.

Facebook offers 70 lakh Rs Job to IITian

Facebook on Friday recruited one of its addicts from India. The website, which recently logged its 500 millionth active citizen, made an offer of about Rs 70 lakh for a posting in the United States, which has created a buzz on all IIT campuses where annual placements are on.

In the last three days, no other company, domestic or foreign, has come close to offering this kind of a compensation package.

While Facebook is still interviewing more IITians, the student in question, who gives his name as DKS — he is to graduate from the school of computer science and engineering at IIT-Kharagpur in 2011 and doesn't want his full name to be revealed — has received a '' join-us'' post from the website.

On his wall, DKS announces how he is hooked to Facebook, which cuts his day by half. He now knows that the social networking site, known as the Big Boss of the web-world, will eat up his days.

On the offer letter, officials from IIT-Kharagpur said Facebook offered a starting salary of $90,000, a relocation bonus of $10,000 and a one-time signing amount of $25,000 to the 21-year-old from Jamshedpur. But on the Kharagpur campus, students said DKS had also been offered ESOPs and the entire offer translates to about Rs 1.7 crore.

However, sources in the placement cell did not confirm this. DKS, whose father is a government employee, has in his time at IIT interned as a research assistant at the University of British Columbia and at Microsoft India.

Interviews were on till late Friday at IIT-Madras where Facebook shortlisted 10 students. But, after several rounds of interviews, it did not select anyone from IIT-Delhi. Close to 30 students were placed from IIT-B on Friday.

At IIT-Madras, the highest domestic offer on Friday came from Transocean, which offered Rs 28 lakh and the high point of the day was when Intel offered positions to 30 students.

At IIT-B, Tower Research which offered jobs to six students, was among the high paying companies. Several financial institutions — Goldman sachs, Bank of American, Deustche Bank, Citibank, Capital one— have made a come back after lying low in the recessionary years.

N Ramesh Babu, adviser (training and placement), IIT Madras, is both excited as well as in a dilemma of sorts with 250-odd recruiters comprising a mix of old and new economy having lined up in close slots till end-January 2011.

''We are in a position where, say, after 20 days you may not have enough students for recruitment. We have not been able to give dates for some companies.

Most companies which hire here, will also be going to the other IITs,'' he said. In the last two days, IIT-Delhi too has seen 110 students being offered jobs.(TOI)

IIT Joint Admission Test for M.Sc on May 8, 2011

The Joint Admission Test for M.Sc (JAM) for pursuing post-graduation at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) will be conducted on May 8, 2011 at various test centres in the Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee Zones.

The test will be conducted for admission into various M.Sc. courses at the IITs

The eligibility criteria for all candidates who qualify in JAM-2011 for admissions in IITs is at least 55% aggregate marks (taking into account all subjects, including languages and subsidiaries, all years combined) for General/ OBC category candidates and at least 50% aggregate marks (taking into account all subjects, including languages and subsidiaries, all years combined) for SC, ST and PD category candidates in the qualifying degree.

For candidates with letter grades/CGPA (instead of percentage of marks), the equivalence in percentage of marks will be decided by the admitting institute(s).

Proof of having passed the qualifying degree with the minimum educational qualification as specified by the admitting institute should be submitted by September 30, 2011.

Candidates can apply for the test in two formats, either online or offline. The preferred mode of application process is online. Candidates can obtain a packet containing the Application Form, Information Brochure & Envelope from designated bank branches of Punjab National Bank on cash payment or from the JAM Office, IIT Roorkee after submitting a demand draft for the appropriate amount.

For the online application forms, the payment has to be through demand draft only, drawn in favor of "Chairman, JAM 2011, IIT Roorkee ", on any bank, payable at Roorkee.

The last date for the sale and submission of the application forms is January 31,2011

52 candidates admitted to IIT by mistake - Kapil Sibal

Clarifying the withdrawal of offer of admission to 52 candidates from IITs, the human resource development ministry on Friday said that the offers were made "erroneously" to the candidates.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal said that according to the Joint Admission Board, 52 candidates in the general category were offered admission to IIT though they had not qualified in the test.

"Some candidates who wrote the JEE 2010 were erroneously offered admission. The inadvertent error in course allocation pertained to candidates who had not qualified in the architecture/designaptitude test, were offered admission," Sibal said quoting information from the Joint Admission Board.

"Their admission was later withdrawn and the places were filled by eligible candidates," he said.

According to the ministry, 41 of the candidates were provided admission in the second list while the rest 11 could not be taken as "they had not filled a large number of choices even though they has been advised to do so during their counseling".

The minister also said that two of the candidates had gone to court.

"The JEE system has introduced additional checks in their procedure so that such an error does not recur," Sibal added. IANS

Restriction to use Internet by students, IIT-K

Perturbed over back-to-back cases of students committing suicide at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K), the institute authorities may put restriction on the round-the-clock internet facility available to the students on the campus during late night hours.

At present the students have freedom to access internet all through the day.

"This 24-hour freedom to the students of using the internet facility seems to be affecting their studies and leaving them fatigued. With incomplete sleep and lack of concentration in the classroom, the students fall in depression," said one of the faculty members of IIT-K, who was a part of a fact-finding team in one such suicide instance.

"Hostelers keep surfing the internet throughout the night. When they go for the classes, they are tired due to lack of sleep. Thus, they are not able to concentrate on academics. This leads to stress," said SS Kashalkar, registrar, IIT-Kanpur.

Therefore, soon the internet service provided to the students at their hostel rooms may be suspended from 12 in the midnight till 8 in the morning, he said further.

Kashalkar further informed that a proposal to this affect will be sent by the counselling cell to the faculty members and the student senate for approval.

Meanwhile, when TOI spoke to a few IIT-K students about the snapping of the internet facility, they expressed their disagreement over the proposal.

"Do you think imposing ban on use of internet during the midnight hours will stop students from committing suicide," questioned an MTech student while talking to TOI.

He further added, "Internet usage varies from student to student. For some it might be a source of entertainment only but for others it is of a great help in studies. Thousands of students on the campus make use of internet and banning it at the time of our studies is not acceptable."

Interestingly, there were several other students who were not in favour of placing ban on the use of internet.

"In today's age, our authorities are thinking of restricting the internet during the time when most of the students here study. It is surprising. This is not the right solution to prevent suicides from taking place here in the institute. The students in stress and depression need counselling service and help from psychiatrists and restricting internet will not give any good results," said another IIT-Kanpur student on the condition of not being named.

Though on the other hand, the IIT-K professors were on an opinion of restricting the use of internet for the students.

"If internet service is restricted during midnight, it will help students in focussing towards their academics during the class hours," said a senior IIT-K professor.
