100 Percent Cut-Off to Keep Away Science Students - Kapil Sibal

Students aspiring to join Delhi University for undergraduate courses were aware that admission cut-offs this year would be high, but they were clearly left baffled when the qualifying marks soared sky high - even touching 100 percent in one college. Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal termed the development as "very sad".

Ashima Sharma, a student who wants to pursue B.Com (Honors) from the SRCC, one of the top-notch colleges on the campus, said, "I have got an aggregate of 98 percent which, everyone told me, was a good percentage to get into any college. But 100 percent is just impossible!"

Reacting to the high cut-offs, especially the 100 percent mark in the SRCC, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said, "This morning I got the news that the cut-off in one college is 100 percent. I felt very sad, especially for the parents and the children who work so hard and get 97 and 98 percent, and one college says that if you are in science stream unless you have 100 percent you will not get admission."

He attributed the high cut-offs "largely" to students getting high marks in the school leaving examinations. "That is why colleges are much more cautious with their cut-offs," he said.

This year the varsity did away with the application process for admission to its undergraduate courses. So, the colleges declared the cut-offs on the basis of last year's marks.

Most of the colleges fixed very high cut-offs for various undergraduate courses in DU this year. In the science courses too, the cut-offs have seen a big jump.

For instance, in Daulat Ram College, the rise in the cut-off for B.Sc. Chemistry (Honors) was 13 percent over last year and Gargi College saw a rise of 12 percent.

The university will declare the second list June 21. With a total of five lists this year, unlike four in the past, the admission process will continue till July 13.

Delhi University's academic year begins July 15. IANS

Baba Ramdev is one of the symbols of India’s anarchy

Baba Ramdev was not greatly popular in south India but suddenly shot to fame when he threatened to go on fast in a campaign to wipe out corruption. This is a cause that is dear to the common man of India who is poor, homeless and in tears because he belongs to the have-not humanity.

Ramdev is not a poor man. His assets of Rs 1,100 crore put him in the richer classes who cannot shed tears for the poor. India has two crore people who go to bed every night without food, thousands of children who go without proper nutrition and millions of mothers who are unable to give healthy food or milk to their babies.

When corruption was mounting - and even judges like a former chief justice of the Supreme Court allegedly touched Everest-like heights of bribery and grab - Ramdev remained a 'moundev' . We need men whose every dimension of personality speaks for the have-nots , not ones who wake up only when corruption is at its darkest and even then ask for a sena, knowing well that violence can never produce justice.

Anarchy, alas, has come to stay and Ramdev is one of its symbols. He is a great yogi and naturally commands respect. He has a large number of followers and it's a fact that people are fascinated by his campaign against corruption.

"Parliament is not a congress of ambassadors from different and hostile interests; which interests each must maintain, as an agent and advocate , against other agents and advocates; but parliament is a deliberative assembly of one nation, with one interest, that of the whole; where, not local purposes, not local prejudices ought to guide, but the general good, resulting from the general reason of the whole. You choose a member indeed; but when you have chosen him, he is not member of Bristol, but he is a member of Parliament."

Only 1800 applications for C-JET

C-JET
Delhi University  has received only 1800 applications for the Combined Journalism Entrance Test . C-JET is conducted for the first time. The C-JET is scheduled to be conducted on June 19, 2011. The last date for the sale and submission of application forms for C-JET was June 8, 2011.

Earlier, the University has said that it was expecting around 3000 applications for the test. The strict eligibility criteria set for admission into the journalism course is the reason behind lesser number of applicants. Moreover, the cutoff percentage for candidates from the general and OBC category applying for the programme was 70%.

In total, DU has 181 seats for the journalism course in its five colleges that offer BA (Honors) Journalism. They are namely - Lady Shri Ram, Kamala Nehru College, Kalindi College, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce and Maharaja Agrasen College.

As per sources, C-JET will be conducted by Maharaja Agrasen College. Sunil Sondhi, principal of Maharaja Agrasen College said that they had been expecting around 2000-3000 applications, but maybe the cutoff was too high for most candidates. He also mentioned that 35% weightage will be given to class 12 marks. Therefore, students with a good aggregate have an edge over others.

Moreover, college's offering the journalism course has also decided to give 50% weightage to the entrance test score and 15% to the personal interview. The results of the C-JET will be announced on June 29, 2011. Besides, students who successfully qualify the written entrance test will have to appear for an interview to be held between July 2 and 8.

How to choose the best college & course in India?

There are two times in every students life that is the most crucial for him. The first time is when he has to choose what he wants to do in life after passing the 10th standard and the next is which college he should choose after 12th to pursue his interests. This brings us to the question, how should we choose the best college?
The main thing one should remember is that there is no best colleges. A college can be the best option for one student while it completely irrelevant to another. So what we will try to do is find the best colleges for every individual so that it meets all his needs and gives a push to achieve what he wanted in life.
The first step to finding out the college which is the best for you, is to write down a few points on a piece of paper. Here are the questions you should ask yourself and write down the answers to:
1. What is it that you want to do?
2. Where do you see yourself 10 years down the road?
3. In which stream do you want to pursue your further education?
4. Which are the top ranked colleges for that particular stream in India?
5. Which of these colleges are near to your place?
6. Which colleges do you think will be eligible to?
7. What are the placement your choice of stream has been getting from these colleges?
After you write the answers to these questions, log on to the Internet and try to find the colleges which meet all your requirements and check it against your answer list to see whether it fits all the criteria.
Now you have a list of maybe five to six colleges. You now have to select the best college out of these. Most student cannot get to decide which will be the best college out of these short-listed colleges. I will give you a small tip to get you through this dilemma. Go and contact the senior students of the colleges.
Yes, go and contact the senior students. They know what the college has given them and how they have been benefited. They will also tell you whether to go for the college or not. They know what is the best features and the worst features of their colleges. Just ask them the question, "How is this college? Should I take admission here for this particular stream?" you will be amazed by some of the answers. You will get a good knowledge on whether the college is really the best according to the stats in the Internet or is their something more to just stats?
At the end all I can say is, trust your instincts! There is nothing better than your instincts to guide you.
Happy college hunting!

CBSE class X result likely to be Declared on May 20

CBSE Exams Results 2011
The usual buzz around the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class X results, expected to come later this week, is missing this year.

Students are eagerly awaiting the CBSE results 2011 Class X and Class XII as the dates the result were expected to come by have gone.

Reports had earlier indicated that Class X results will be declared on May 16 and Class XII results will be declared on May 23. But speculation over the date of the result is high now.
Almost 8 lakh students have appeared for Class XII examinations and almost 11 lakh have appeared for the Class X exams with almost 6 lakh opting for Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation or CCE.

The results will be available at http://cbseresults.nic.in.

Most of the students say they already know their grades for the formative assessments and the first summative assessment.

With the CBSE replacing marks with grades in Class X, expectations, stress and anxiety levels among students and parents are minimal. When the Class X results will be announced — tentatively on May 20 — students will get to know their grades in each subject, plus the grade point and the Cumulative Grade Point Average.
“There is not much excitement,” said Rashi Dhingra from Apeejay School, Pitampura. “We won’t get to know the marks. And I already know the grades for FA I and II and SA-I.”

With the implementation of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system in classes IX and X, the CBSE made Class X assessments entirely school-based. The Board also gave schools the freedom to frame their own datesheet this year. The schools, thus, conducted the assessments internally. For SA-II, the students could opt for either the school-based or the board-conducted assessment, except for students in secondary schools (schools with classes only till Class X), who had to appear for the board-based SA-II.
